The 2021 TYA/USA Virtual Festival & Conference is adapting and changing to respond to the needs of our national TYA community. Spread out over the course of the year, TYA/USA will offer four themed conference opportunities that bring the field together virtually as we move from recovery to reopening.

In October 2020 as a response to field-wide reckoning with racial injustice and inequities in the industry compounded by the COVID crisis, the ReImagine: New Plays in TYA program was launched. Aiming to support the development and visibility of new works for young audiences by BIPOC playwrights in an artist-centered process, the ReImagine Advisory Council selected an inaugural cohort of eight grantee playwrights and matched them with host theatres for workshops. Through three webinar sessions and a showcase of videos from the workshops, the REIMAGINE TYA series will offer insight into the first year of the program and provide space to collectively dream and discuss the future of new TYA development.

Samantha Miller (she/her) is a youth entertainment writer and performer based in Los Angeles, CA. Known for writing fun, modern, and often digital worlds, she loves to write stories that reach today’s kids through the metaverse that their parents haven’t quite figured out yet. Samantha is a member of the Writer’s Room at the Bay Area Children’s Theatre, as well as a performer and content creator for Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre.

Ashleigh Akilah Rucker hails from sunny San Diego, Ca. and attended UC Santa Barbara, where she studied Biology and Theater. For over a decade, she has used theater and the arts to educate under resourced communities throughout Southern California for Kaiser Permanente Educational Theatre. Ashleigh believes in using storytelling to disrupt systems of oppression and tell the vibrant and nuanced stories that have been pushed to the margins. Lee Cataluna’s most recent work includes commissions from Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Visual Sovereignty) and Arena Stage (Indigenous Earth Voices). Recent work includes What the Stars See at Night for LaJolla Playhouse and Funeral Attire, which won the Von Marie Atchley Award for Excellence in Playwriting from Native Voices at the Autry. Christin Eve Cato

Christin Eve Cato is a playwright and performing artist from the Bronx. She holds an MFA in Playwriting from Indiana University and completed her BA degree at Fordham University. Cato is also a graduate of Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School for Music and Art and the Performing Arts. She is an ensemble member with NYC theater companies, Pregones/PRTT, and INTAR Theatre. She is also a proud member of the Latinx Playwrights Circle. Honoring her Puerto Rican and Jamaican roots, Cato’s artistic style is expressed through Caribbean culture and the Afro-Latinx diaspora. She has developed her work with The Classical Theatre of Harlem, Harlem9, Pregones Theater, Milagro, Borderlands Theater, Teatro Vivo, Indiana University, Texas State University, Cardinal Stage, Conch Shell Productions, KCACTF, and The Silverton Theatre Mine. Cato is also the recipient of the 2020 Greater Good Commission for Afro-Latinx writers. An aspiring screenwriter, she is currently repped by 3 Arts Entertainment.

Ramón Esquivel’s recent productions include The Hero Twins: Blood Race at University of Texas at Austin and Appalachian State University, The Shahrazad Society at ACME Theatre, and Luna at Filament Theatre and Luna Stage. His work is featured in two anthologies, Palabras del Cielo: An Exploration of Latina/o Theatre for Young Audiences and New Visions/New Voices: 25 Years/25 Plays. Ramón is Assistant Professor of Theatre – Playwriting at Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo.

Mabelle Reynoso is a multidisciplinary storyteller and teaching artist who works in non-traditional theatre spaces, including classrooms, community centers, and correctional facilities. She is co-host of the podcast Hey Playwright and leads TuYo Theatre’s Pa’ Letras, a writing workshop for emerging Latinx playwrights. She has a BFA from New York University, an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, and is currently pursuing her PhD in Education for Social Justice from the University of San Diego.

Nakeisha Daniel is a professional actress, director, choreographer and educator who has been seen on national and international stages and screen. Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, she earned a BFA in Musical Theater, an MFA in Acting from Penn State University, and went on to further her studies in London and Canada. She served as the first-ever Guest Artist in Residence at the Citadel Military College of South Carolina and is a 2018 Eugene O’Neill Theater Center Cabaret and Performance Fellow. She has partnered with a variety of organizations including; The Alliance Theater Center, The Children’s Arts Guild (NYC), TYA USA, Charleston Gaillard Center, Engaging Creative Minds, and presented at SXSW ED Virtual Conference. Nakeisha currently serves as Assistant Professor of African American Theatre & Performance at The College of Charleston and is a member of Actors’ Equity Association

Idris Goodwin is an award winning scriptwriter, breakbeat poet, educator and executive director of The Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College. He was recently named a 2021 United States Artist Fellow. In addition to Can I Kick It?, he’s had several publications from Haymarket Books including Inauguration co written with nico wilkinson, Human Highlight: Ode To Dominique Wilkins, and the play This Is Modern Art. Mireya (Murry) Hepner is the founder of In Other People’s Shoes Productions, a new company that tells imaginative, impactful and artistic stories for young people and families from all walks of life. She believes deeply in creating theatre that encourages empathy and that opens young minds to new possibilities. Before the pandemic, she led Rancho Cucamonga’s MainStreet Theatre Company for all of its 14 seasons, curating and collaborating on 40 innovative shows geared for children and family audiences.
Her 35+ years working in the American Theatre includes productions on Broadway, Off Broadway, in Regional Theatre and on tour. A few of her memorable projects include James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim’s Tony award winning Passion (Stage Manager, Lincoln Center Theatre and Broadway), Anna Deavere Smith’s House Arrest (Coordinating Producer: Arena Stage), 6 tours with legendary mime Marcel Marceau (Company Manager, U.S. & Australia), and 2 seasons of The Radio City Christmas Spectacular (Production Manager: Universal Amphitheatre, Los Angeles), among many others. She has a BA in Theatre from UCLA, trained as a stage manager at the London Academy of Music and Drama, and as an Arts Manager in the MFA program at Brooklyn College. She’s been a grant panelist for the NEA and the California Arts Council, a reader for “Write Now”, and Is proud to serve on the board of TYA /USA , the National Service Organization for the field of Theatre for Young Audiences.

Andrew D. Harris – Producing Artistic Director, StageOne Family Theatre. Andrew is a producer, director, and teacher who has dedicated 20 years to StageOne Family Theatre. During his tenure, he has overseen the development of StageOne’s Early Childhood programming, expanded public programming, revived new play development, and spent thousands of hours teaching in and through the arts. A graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, he has directed locally and regionally, including over 40 plays at StageOne.

Delaney Piggins
Panelist - Session #2: COLLABORATION
Delaney Piggins currently serves as the Artistic Producer at COCA – Center of Creative Arts, where her work has shaped the programming and productions of COCAwrites, which aims to develop plays for multi-generational audiences by a multi-generational team of artists. Delaney previously served as an Associate Producer on St. Louis Shakespeare Festival’s Shakespeare in The Streets, and Lead Teaching Artist for their community engagement and education programming. Delaney is a playwright and member of the 2021 Confluence Regional Writers Cohort at St. Louis Shakespeare Festival where her new play HOMES will premiere in January of 2022. Other credits include the premiere of her play Burden of Proof at SATE in 2018 and Exit Left Theatre Company 2020.

Aurelia Clunie
Host & Facilitator - Session #3: INNOVATION
Aurelia Clunie is a director, actor, and teaching artist who works with professionals and non-professionals to create performances that amplify unheard voices. As Education Associate for Student Audiences at Hartford Stage she taught acting, Creative Drama, and Shakespeare performance to students ages three to 72 and produced staged readings of student plays through the Write On program which brings professional playwrights to Hartford to mentor young writers. Aurelia initiated Hartford Stage’s participation as a regional host in TYA/USA’s Young Playwrights For Change. She has served as Community Engagement Manager at Studio Theatre and Community Engagement Associate at Long Wharf Theatre. Aurelia holds a Bachelors of Science from Northwestern University and is currently pursuing her MFA in directing at DePaul University.

Johamy Morales (she/her) is a 20 year veteran of TYA Theatre. Johamy is dedicated to producing new works, community engagement and social justice through theatre. Johamy currently serves as the Director of Education and Engagement, and on the Artistic Advisory Circle for Seattle Children’s Theatre (SCT). Recently she served as a Trustee for Theatre Communication Group (TCG) and is directing with First Stage and Arts West in Seattle, Wa. Johamy has worked with various schools and nonprofit organizations both nationally and internationally including the US State Department, US Embassy & Consulate of India, La Jolla Playhouse, Arena Stage, South Africa’s Grahamstown National Arts Festival, Creede Repertory Theatre, Interlochen Center for the Arts, American Alliance for Education & Theatre, Child’s Play: Write Now, First Stage, Arts West, Hope College, Fort Lewis College, University of San Diego, Esperanza Charter School, and Columbus Refugee & Immigration Services. To him, there’s nothing worse than logging off from his party of friends and sitting through another lonely and mundane day of 7th grade. When the student body president (and girl of his dreams) takes notice of Devon’s natural leadership abilities in a time of need, Devon starts to wonder if maybe some of what makes him so epic online can also make the real world a little more interesting… An action-packed play split between two different worlds and two different personas shows us how one smart kid discovers his true superpower.

Pia’s Wondrous Adventures in Tlaxlandia (A Musical Toy Theatre, Puppetry, Graphic Novel, Digital Mashup for a Brief Digital Age) unfolds in seven short episodes using different forms of storytelling. Pia’s Wondrous Adventures in Tlaxlandia begins in a cemetery during a funeral service where Pia, a ten-year old Latinx child, mourns the recent death of her neighbor, godfather, and best friend Mr. Jesse, from COVID-19. As Pia mourns Mr. Jesse, the mysterious Hummingbird Wizard, calls upon her to help his beloved Tlaxlandia, a mythical Mesoamerican world, where plants and birds speak in an ancient language. Lord Ocelotl, the Jaguar Lord of the Night, enters through a breach in the universe finding them. The Hummingbird Wizard is forced to escape taking Pia with him to Tlaxlandia. Pia’s journey to save this magical world will challenge her heart and soul as she confronts Lord Ocelotl, and the Empress Elvirus, the Sorceress of the Eastern Moons. The play explores how children negotiate loss, healing, and empathy while celebrating the human spirit and unlikely heroes.

¡Lotería: Game On! is a play inspired by the Mexican bingo-like game Lotería. One rainy night, siblings Sam and Kris are completely consumed by their devices as their mother sets up a pillow fort and invites them to play Lotería. Her invitation is met with a resounding “NO.” When the internet goes out, Sam and Kris are outraged. Where is their Mom to fix it?! The kids soon discover that the pillow fort is a magical portal to the world of Lotería and their mother is trapped inside the game. Sam and Kris set out to bring her back, but Lotería will not let her go so easily. Conceived as an interactive experience, ¡Lotería: Game On! invites the audience to join Sam and Kris as they play to win back their mother.

It’s the 4th anniversary of Jaden and Julissa’s father’s death. To celebrate his life, Mom gets the family together to talk about their fun moments with Dad. This ritual is always painful for the siblings: Julissa is still not ready to talk about her memories, and young Jaden barely has any of his own that he can recollect. To solve the ritual problem, Jaden invents a Memory App that is able to infiltrate the brain to show all the memories stored in it. Tempted with the idea of seeing Dad again, Julissa secretly syncs herself to the Memory App and gets accidentally trapped inside of her brain! After finding her unconscious, Jaden frantically tries to fix the malfunction and calls on their friends Milton, Destiny, and Kira to join the effort to save Julissa. But a big problem awaits them- Julissa discovers that being inside of her brain grants her the opportunity to erase unwanted memories, like Dad’s death. If the team doesn’t reach Julissa before she makes this major decision the repercussions could change her life forever!

The Hawaiian tradition of hanai is often translated to mean informal adoption, but is really a broader idea of a chosen family. Two young girls are being raised as hanai children. When their grandmother gets sick, the children must go to live in separate homes. The girls struggle with what it means to be family and all the commitments and responsibilities that come with loving someone. The story is partially told using hei, Hawaiian string figures, which are like Cat’s Cradle, but are unique to Hawaii. String figures are a part of many indigenous cultures and are a way to learn, strengthen memory, and connect with another player. There is something very magical about creating shapes with just a simple loop of string and your hands. In this time of social unrest and disagreement about what “family values” really mean, this is a story about how a family is defined by who you love and how you care for one another.

Ezequiel “Zeq” Zapata is annoyed to be spending their 17th birthday working at The Pop, a burger joint in a rural town. Coworkers Lolo, JC, and bestie Panchita try to cheer up Zeq, but The Pop is slammed. When a bus carrying a school choir pulls up, Zeq spots dreamy Danilo for the first time. Time moves slowly. Music plays. Fingers touch in a bag of tots. Electricity. As Zeq and Danilo get to know each other online, they share dreams of fame, discuss shared interests and passions, and open up about their coming out experiences. Their romance blossoms. When the fame that Zeq so desperately wants arrives unexpectedly, but not in the way they imagined, everything changes. What happens when dreams meet reality? What makes us special? How do we navigate romance when we’re still figuring out friendship? ZEQ is a play with music for teen audiences that explores these questions. It is also something that I have wanted to write for years: an unequivocal love story about and for queer youth.

Kaleidoscope Crown by Ashleigh Akilah Rucker is a play about a bright and brave young girl named Nia who is in search of her purpose in a village steeped in traditionalism. One day, she awakes with a secret superpower: her hair magically changes with her feelings. With every new sensation she conjures up multicolor tresses. But the monochromatic world around her puts an instant target on her back. At first, she’s ashamed of this gift as passersby gawk and point and judge what is different from themselves. She must stand up against the only world she knows and learn to embrace her transformation. For once she does, it sends a title wave through her village as others begin revealing their own uniqueness and the world becomes a more vibrant and inclusive place. And all because our young heroine showed up as her authentic self.

On the last day of summer vacation all the kids in the neighborhood gather in the woods for their annual game of Capture the Flag. This summer tradition has been passed down from kid generation to kid generation. Teams are chosen, traps are laid, flags are hidden, and glory is won. But this summer something is different. Someone is missing. A heaviness weighs on the game as the kids grapple with and attempt to come to terms with their feelings of loss and friendship.

In a field that is predominantly white and often housed in predominantly white spaces, in what ways do BIPOC artists lead what stories are told, and how they are told? This session looks at artists’ purpose and vision within the field of TYA. ReImagine playwrights gather to discuss their approaches to craft, storytelling, and centering BIPOC voices that reflect today’s young audiences.
