Yana Wana’s Legend of the Bluebonnet

Indigenous Cultures Institute

The play was produced by an all-Indigenous cast and crew with intentionality about authentic representation of the Coahuiltecan Native culture. The story of modern-day, 13-year old Maria and her journey to her ancestral heritage offers a seldom-seen glimpse into the timeless spirituality of Indigenous people. Audiences are drawn to Maria’s tumultuous relationship with her Coahuiltecan grandmother, in awe of the spiritual set and costumes, delighted by the authentic dances of the ancestors, and transformed by the five original Native language songs.
