Bay Area Children's Theatre is seeking a Technical Director to manage
professional scene shop, build sets, and manage shop team


  • Plan, develop, schedule and provide the technical support needed for each production
  • Build production sets by deadline dates
  • Manage all personnel in scene shop
  • Order all necessary materials for builds
  • Manage budget and expenses; stay within budget; receive written approval from Producer or Director of Production before making purchases that exceed prior approved budget
  • Coordinate and manage build schedule daily, weekly, monthly and yearly
  • Manage shop team’s individual schedules on the same frequency
  • Create Structural drawings from the scenic elevations
  • Attend production meetings as needed
  • Communicate with scenic designers throughout the season
  • Manage all load ins and load outs for BACT productions; coordinate schedules with production managers, plan daily schedules, lead the load in/out teams, ensure staffing needs are met and drive 10’–20′ trucks
  • Be familiar with the characteristics of BACT spaces and specs to assist designers
  • Manage and maintain shop facilities including but not limited to shop equipment, safety precautions, inventory
  • Attend tech rehearsals as needed
  • Coordinate storage and/or disposal of used set pieces in the scene shop
  • Maintain a safe working environment at all times


  • Have a minimum of two years experience in a professional theatre or equivalent university setting building scenic elements for theatre
  • Advanced carpentry, sewing and painting abilities
  • Skill in small electrical wiring
  • Understanding of technical drawings
  • Comprehensive knowledge of AutoCad, SketchUp, Vectorworks, Photoshop
  • Image editing skills for floor, backdrop and reference images
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Have strong time management skills and the ability to work independently
  • Be comfortable working in a fast-paced, creative, collaborative environment
  • Remain calm under pressure
  • Have strong problem-solving skills
  • Have a valid driver’s license and a clean driving record
  • Be comfortable driving a 10-20 foot truck
  • Be able to lift 50 poundsFull-time salary DOE. To start in December 2019
