Drama Desk Award-winning TADA! Youth Theater actively seeks Music/Vocal Directors for its 2023-2024 production season.

Founded in 1984, TADA! Youth Theater inspires young people from different backgrounds to be creative, learn, and think differently through high-quality musical theater productions, and educational programs. TADA!’s vision is that all young people grow up feeling successful, creative, confident, accepted, and accepting of themselves. Through the ability of people learning to express themselves well, we can break down barriers of racism and inequality and create positive, active citizens.

The Resident Youth Ensemble of TADA! (RYET), is a diverse, free, year-round pre-professional training and positive youth development program with youth ages 8-18 from all over New York City’s 5 boroughs and parts of New Jersey. Ensemble Members have a variety of experience and abilities. Applicants should have a passion for and love working with youth, have a lot of energy, and be a great communicator and collaborator with young performers and adults. Productions are typically 45-55 minute musicals with casts of 15-30 RYET Members.

Compensation: This is a part-time salaried position, weekly salary of $700 paid biweekly through payroll.

Winter Production Commitment: February 12, 2024 – May 11, 2024 (11.5 weeks, Off Feb 19th-February 27th)

  • Auditions: February 15th 3:30-7:00pm. The show is cast from the current members of the RYET. Not everyone who auditions has to be cast. There is a meeting on Feb 15th from 7- 9pm following the audition to make casting decisions.
  • Rehearsals: Feb 28th- April 11th
  • Basic rehearsal schedule: Wednesdays/Thursdays 3:30-7:00pm, Fridays 3:30-8:00pm, Saturdays 1:30-6:00pm. The Music Director does not always have to be at rehearsals when it’s the Director and/or Choreographer’s time to work.
  • Tech Rehearsal Schedule: April 12th – April 20th; Saturday/Sunday 11:00-7:00pm; Wed-Fri 3:30-7:30pm
  • Production Meetings, Prep Work and band rehearsal happen outside of rehearsal hours
  • Performances: April 20th – May 11th basically Saturday and Sunday 2:00pm & 4:00pm

Summer Production Commitment: May 16, 2022 – July 29, 2022 (11 weeks)

  • Auditions: May 20th
  • Rehearsals: May 24th-July 1st (Off May 26th-30th, June 24th & 25th)
  • Basic rehearsal schedule: Wednesdays/Thursdays 3:30-7:00pm, Fridays 3:30-8:00pm, Saturdays 1:30-6:00pm. The Music Director does not always have to be at rehearsals when it’s the Director and/or Choreographer’s time to work.
  • Rehearsals shift to 12pm-6pm from June 28th-July 2nd
  • Tech Rehearsal Schedule: July 5th-13th, 11:00-7:00pm
  • Production Meetings, Prep Work and Band rehearsal happen outside of rehearsal hours
  • Performances: 7pm Thursdays & Fridays, 2pm & 7pm Saturdays, 2pm Sundays

Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading vocal warm-ups
  • Teaching young actors vocal scores and harmonies, many of which do not read music. As well as working with cast members individually on vocal techniques and improving their singing
    Accompanying rehearsals and transposing music to meet the performers’ abilities when necessary
  • Creatively driving the musical aspects of the show
  • Recruiting, scheduling, and rehearsing a band for performances
  • Playing piano and conducting for performances and/or special events
  • Giving notes to young actors throughout rehearsals and the run of performances
  • Private vocal work/voice lessons with cast members.
