RESIDENT TEACHING ARTIST – FULL-TIME

REPORTS TO: Education Director

BROAD FUNCTION

Resident Teaching Artist works closely with the Education Director to increase capacity for Metro Theater Company’s education programs and services. Resident Teaching Artist plans and teaches school and community residencies, as well as teaches in Metro Theater Company’s summer camps and professional development workshops. Resident Teaching Artist works closely with the Education Director to design, plan, and implement new programs, sustain current programs, and cultivate relationships with current and potential partners for Metro Theater Company’s education programming.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Teach Metro Theater Company curriculum-based residencies in schools and community programs, professional development workshops, and summer programs;
  • Participate in the ongoing development of new curriculum to be implemented in Metro Theater Company’s education programs;
  • With the Education Director, help supervise and support the growth of the annual Teaching Artist Fellow, contracted teaching artists, and education interns;
  • With the Education Director, meet with school district, social service and community representatives to increase effective connections between Metro Theater Company’s programs and services, school, and community needs;
  • Assist in marketing, promotion, and administration of both current and new education programs offered by Metro Theater Company;
  • Assist in the preparation of education materials (e.g., learning guides, social stories, etc.), marketing materials, and grants, as appropriate;
  • Coordinate the gathering of statistics for education programs;
  • Manage all day-to-day summer camp admin including but not limited to updating registration, communicating with camp families, and coordinating with institutional partners about logistics and camper experience;
  • Attend Metro Theater Company Mainstage performances, tours, and special events, as requested by the Education Director;
  • Participate in the planning and execution of education events connected to productions including but not limited to sensory friendly performances, educator preview performances, and pre/post-show activities;
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, board meetings focused on education programming, annual board advance, and other meetings, as requested by Education or Artistic Director;
  • Stay current on trends and issues in education/arts education through ongoing reading and research;
  • Represent and promote Metro Theater Company at public functions at the request of the Education or Artistic Director;
  • Take on additional reasonable duties as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A deep respect for the intelligence of young people, and enthusiasm for the mission of Metro Theater Company;
  • Degree in Theatre for Young Audiences, Theatre Education, or a related field or equivalent practical experience;
  • Experience facilitating creative drama, community building, and/or arts integration in PreK-12 classroom settings;
  • Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team, both in and out of the classroom with people of varied backgrounds;
  • Ability to work productively in a remote environment. Though MTC’s education department is frequently in schools and community settings across the St. Louis region, many meetings, or independent work time may be conducted remotely;
  • Open to growth through feedback and reflection;
  • Excellent communication skills, especially while working with young people directly or communicating with stakeholders, either in person or via email;
  • Strong attention to detail, including analyzing data, designing curriculum, and planning program schedules;
  • Current on trends and issues in education/arts education;
  • Knowledge of Theater of the Oppressed pedagogy is a plus;
  • Strong sense of humor and knows how to have fun at work;
  • Ability to adapt quickly to new circumstances as they arise;
  • An interest in building relationships with educators and community members across the St. Louis region;
  • Given the nature of our work in school and community sites across the St. Louis region, the Resident Teaching Artist must have access to a reliable vehicle. Mileage is reimbursable from MTC’s offices to offsite teaching locations.

COMPENSATION:

$41,500 annually

Benefits package includes access to MTC’s medical insurance plan (MTC pays 80% of the base plan, employee pays 20%), dental and vision plans, and a match of up to 3% of salary towards employee contributions to a SIMPLE IRA retirement fund.
