Drama Desk Award-winning TADA! Youth Theater actively seeks Music/Vocal Directors for its 2023-2024 production season.

Founded in 1984, TADA! Youth Theater inspires young people from different backgrounds to be creative, learn, and think differently through high-quality musical theater productions, and educational programs. TADA!’s vision is that all young people grow up feeling successful, creative, confident, accepted, and accepting of themselves. Through the ability of people learning to express themselves well, we can break down barriers of racism and inequality and create positive, active citizens.

The Resident Youth Ensemble of TADA! (RYET), is a diverse, free, year-round pre-professional training and positive youth development program with youth ages 8-18 from all over New York City’s 5 boroughs and parts of New Jersey. Ensemble Members have a variety of experience and abilities. Applicants should have a passion for and love working with youth, have a lot of energy, and be a great communicator and collaborator with young performers and adults. Productions are typically 45-55 minute musicals with casts of 15-30 RYET Members.

Compensation: This is a 6-week part-time salaried position, weekly salary of $480 paid biweekly through payroll.

Summer Commitment: July 2, 2024 – August 9, 2024 (11 weeks)

  • Auditions: July 2nd
  • Rehearsals: July 10th – August 9th(Off July 3rd-8th, Saturday-Tuesday).
  • Basic rehearsal schedule: Wednesdays-Friday 2:00pm-7:00pm. The Music Director does not always have to be at rehearsals when it’s the Director and/or Choreographer’s time to work. Specific schedules will be created weekly with a breakdown of what will be worked on.

Fall Commitment: (Pending successful collaboration over the summer)

  • Rehearsals: September 11th-October 11th
  • Basic rehearsal schedule: Wednesdays/Thursdays 3:15-7:00pm, Fridays 3:00-8:00pm Saturdays 1:30-6pm
  • Tech Rehearsal Schedule: October 12th-October 19th, Wednesday/Thursday 3-7:30pm. Friday 3-8pm, Saturday/Sunday 11-7pm
  • Production Meetings, Prep Work and Band rehearsal happen outside of rehearsal hours
  • Performances Fridays 7pm Saturdays & Sundays 2pm & 4pm
  • Please note that compensation for the Fall schedule will be discussed in the Fall, but will likely fall in between $600-$750/week.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Leading vocal warm-ups
  • Teaching young actors vocal scores and harmonies, many of which do not read music. As well as working with cast members individually on vocal techniques and improving their singing
  • Accompanying rehearsals and transposing music to meet the performers’ abilities when necessary
  • Creatively driving the musical aspects of the show
  • Recruiting, scheduling, and rehearsing a band for performances
  • Playing piano and conducting for performances and/or special events
  • Giving notes to young actors throughout rehearsals and the run of performances
  • Private vocal work/voice lessons with cast members.
