Compensation

$70,000-$80,000 range; Full Health and Dental Insurance; SIMPLE IRA plan

REPORTS TO: The Coterie’s Board of Directors

JOB TYPE: Exempt position, minimum 40 hours/week (salaried)

JOB OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Board of Directors and in co-equal partnership with the Producing Artistic Director (PAD), the Managing Director (MD) will be a dynamic leader who grows and guides the Coterie into the future, while respecting our mission and values. The MD will oversee all aspects of the Coterie’s business functions. In particular, the MD will be responsible for oversight of strategic leadership and vision, fundraising and development, finance and operations, marketing, and the box office. In collaboration with the PAD, staff, and Board, the MD will set clear goals and directions for the organization, prioritize projects and resources, and establish systems and processes to achieve those goals. The MD will work with the PAD and other staff to support season programming and all educational programs in schools and the community, and will also work with the PAD and education director to develop the budgets for these major revenue producing programs. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising and Development

  • Develop and implement funding goals and strategies  for unearned income from foundations and government entities, corporations, and individuals
  • Oversee all grant submissions and reporting, track progress of grant applications and approvals
  • Find creative ways to network and grow connections with both local and national funders
  • Develop a capital plan as needed for major improvements to the Coterie’s space or operating capabilities
  • Liaise with Board of Directors and Advisory Board members to leverage their time, energy, expertise, and funding support on behalf of the Coterie
  • Represent the organization in civic, arts, community, and networking events
  • Finance, Human Resources, and Operations

Develop annual operating budget

  • Provide financial oversight for all operations, and regularly communicate financial performance to the Finance and Operations Committee and the Board
  • Manage relationship with Actors’ Equity Association, including negotiate annual Equity contract, in consultation with the Producing Artistic Director
  • Create new staff positions as needed and manage human resources issues
  • Advise the Board on governance issues and board recruitment policies and activities

Marketing

  • Oversee all marketing efforts, including print and social media
  • Ensure external marketing efforts are relevant, consistent, timely, and effective in growing diverse audiences for all Coterie programs
  • Pursue community partnerships for individual programs and main stage performances

CORE REQUIREMENTS

Minimum qualifications:

  • A proven commitment to fostering the arts in their community
  • Experience managing a department or team of an organization
  • Demonstrated success with raising unearned income from foundations, corporate, and individual funders
  • Understanding arts marketing and branding
  • Financial management and planning, including P&L and budget responsibility
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Excellent communication skills with a variety of audiences
  • Experience negotiating across multiple stakeholders with different perspectives
  • Experience working with board committees and a board of directors

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior Managing Director or Executive Director experience
  • Connections with the Kansas City arts community and funders
  • Three professional references and a background check required
