Job Description:
The Magik Theatre Education Manager leads and manages a comprehensive theatre arts education department by delivering a full scope of programs, classes, community initiatives, residencies, and camps to the San Antonio and South Texas community.

The ideal candidate must be comfortable working independently while leading a diverse cohort of teaching artists and collaborating with other department leads within the organization. They will have a deep understanding and ability to articulate the cross-departmental impact of education and learning through-out every aspect of the organization.

This position requires someone who is knowledgeable about office and budget management, theatre education, creative youth development programming, the creation of theatre-based curricula, and one who has the ability to positively contribute to an anti-racist, anti-supremacist and inclusive work environment.

Applicants for this role should have demonstrated strong leadership, communication, and relationship-building skills. The ideal candidate will have an exceptional respect and appreciation for young people, their families, educators, and will anchor the work of the Education Department in youth-centered pedagogy. This is a full-time position with occasional evening and weekend hours required.

Department and Company Culture:
This position will model the Magik Practices of the Education Department and work in alignment with the workplace environment Magik Theatre upholds as part of the National Organization for Professional Theatre for Young Audiences. “To foster a culture of anti-supremacy while seeking and valuing diversity, equity, and inclusion; and will work in service of the young people, the educators, and the families who experience programming each year with Magik Theatre!”

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exemplify and implement Magik Theatre’s Education Department mission, vision, practices, policies and procedures.
  • Manages all aspects of the education department including the recruitment, training, evaluation of programs, teaching artists, administration of classes, camps, residencies, in alignment with policies and procedures.
  • Manages department budget and collaborates in department strategic planning.
  • Oversee registrations, customer service, and reports of educational programs
  • Develops and implements the curriculum goals and assessment measures for all workshops, residencies, and professional development for teaching artists and educators.
  • Develops a professional network locally and regionally.
  • Partners with teachers, school administrators, district-level fine arts coordinators, and other educational constituents to enhance the arts education experience of students, and with community-based organizations serving adults and families to promote positive youth development and continuing education programs.

  • Collaborates with the marketing, finance, and development department to secure funding for education initiatives.

Job Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Theatre Performance, Education, Arts Administration, or a closely related field, or five years’ experience in Education or Arts Outreach at a Theatre for Young Audiences: Teaching Certificate, or other education certification strongly preferred but not required.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills: Experience and understanding of summer camp programs, afterschool programs, theatre education, and non-profit organizations.
  • Experience in customer service, reception, and or office administration: Experience in facility operations and CRM software is a plus.
  • Background in education and curriculum development: An understanding of Social-Emotional Learning best practices, An understanding of digital education models, Familiarity with state education standards.
  • Strong organizational and administrative skills: Excellent communication skills verbally and written, Strong attention to detail, Knowledgeable in Google Workspace
  • Experience managing others and creating a positive and collaborative work environment: Demonstrated ability to create partnerships with both educational and community organizations, Building long-term rapport with customers, staff, and leadership.
  • Approaches challenges, change, and feedback with a growth mindset: Takes Initiative to Problem Solve and Adapt in fast-paced situations
  • Ability to efficiently collaborate and complete tasks independently: Daily collaboration with Magik Theatre Staff to ensure campers, families, and programs success.
  • Must submit to a Texas State DPS check.
  • Intermediate to Advanced Spanish language skills are highly desired but not required.

Physical Demands

  • Comfortable working in a non-traditional office environment.
  • Working at a desk and on a computer, but also comfortable working with children, sitting on floors, working outside, in classrooms, and other environments that may become necessary to perform responsibilities.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, pull, or otherwise move objects.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and an ability to drive to and from program locations. This may involve sitting for extended periods of time.

Work Schedule:
This position will have work hours physically at the Magik Theatre offices, with flexibility to work from home or off site.
