Position Title: Education Director

Supervisor: Artistic Director

Classification: Part Time (20 hours per week)

Pay Rate: $17.00/hour

Our educational programs provide opportunities for personal development for young people, teaching creativity and responsibility, encouraging teamwork and personal integrity, and fostering self-esteem and appreciation for the performing arts.

Time Commitment: Half time position- hours vary.

Job summary 

Education Director will oversee all aspects of Olympia Family Theater educational programming. Core responsibilities include: overall development, organization, operation and oversight of education programming. Education director will participate in hiring, supervising and training teaching artists and assistants; develop curriculum and educational activities for main stage, daytime programs, and education programs; assist staff in creating an annual budget for educational programs; direct a minimum of one educational workshop and one camp a year. Additional teaching hours paid at teaching artist rate.

Education Director responsibilities and duties 

  •  Develop and supervise teaching staff in delivering age appropriate workshops and camps for all of OFT’s educational offerings
  • Develop new “in arms” creative programs and/or educational offerings for children and their adult caregivers (under 5’s/OFTeenies)
  • Maintain a supportive and safe environment aimed at the well-being of staff, volunteers and program participants
  • Direct a minimum of one educational workshop and one camp each year
  • Work with Daytime Programs Director to develop educational content and “takeaways” for Let’s Play, Field Trips, and Touring Shows
  • Oversee the production of educational materials for both main stage and daytime productions which could include education packets, production talk-backs, and wraparound activities
  • Supervise teaching artists and teach classes and camps as needed
  • Communicate appropriately and effectively with both adults and children
  • Provide high quality customer service to participants and families, both adults and children
  • Work closely with teachers and theater staff to identify issues any program participants are having and develop appropriate solutions
  • Willingness and capacity to train and mentor lead teachers and teaching assistants
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Education Director qualifications and skills 

Required-

  •  3 years theater education or related experience
  • Working understanding of education programs and budgeting
  • A positive, empathetic attitude
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Great collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Awareness of, and commitment to, practices that expand diversity, equity and inclusion

Preferred-

  • BA with emphasis on Theater, Education, or Performing Arts
  • Experience with supervising and managing staff
  • Experience developing curriculum for education programs

Definitely a Plus-

  • Graduate degree (with a concentration in theatre and/or education)
