General Job Description:
Reporting to the Audience Services Manager, the Front of House Associate will assist with all aspects of front of house (FOH) operations during performances and special events, with the goal of maximizing the customer experience.
The ideal candidate will have superb attention to detail, exceptional customer service, organizational and interpersonal skills, the ability to multi-task and work both on a team and independently, an interest in theatre, and be punctual and reliable.
We are currently seeking front of house staff for the 2025-2026 season (September 2025 – June 2026). Shifts typically range from 4-8 hours at a time, depending on show/event schedules. This position requires evening and weekend work, in sync with the theatrical performance schedule and the willingness to be flexible and shift between various functions as needed.
The description of the position in this document is representative and not exhaustive. Regular collaboration between shops in the production department and the wider organization is expected. Duties and responsibilities may shift with organizational needs.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Serve as ticket scanners, bartenders, ushers, and concessions staff as assigned to facilitate prompt and quality service.
- Welcome and assist patrons with general questions, accessibility needs, and ticketing and seating issues.
- Work with the Audience Services Manager to help resolve ticketing and seating questions and concerns according to company policies.
- Help coordinate specialty seating programs as demand requires (ie. “Drama Dot”, “Missed Performance Pass”, Standing Room Only, and other seating programs.
- Follow Syracuse Stage policies regarding access and admittance to backstage areas and non-public spaces of the facility.
- Ensure interior and exterior public areas are clean, accessible and safe, including, but not limited to, lobbies, restrooms, theater spaces, emergency exits and egress. This includes cleaning, housekeeping and trash removal duties when custodial staff is off-duty.
- Evaluate inventory needs and report them as needed to the Audience Services Manager.
- Report pertinent information or feedback to the Audience Services Manager, Assistant Audience Services Manager, or Director of Marketing and Communications as necessary.
- In communication with the Audience Services Manager and other staff, coordinate set-up needs for on-site programming, special events and rentals.
- Provide support as needed for vendors, caterers, and performers in public facing areas.
- Adhere to Syracuse Stage required dress code.
- Assist in Box Office if necessary.
Qualifications & Key Competencies:
In addition to a willingness to receive training, the successful candidate may be, or have:
- High school diploma or GED
- Previous customer service or hospitality experience. Food service and/or bartending experience is a plus.
- Reliable decision-making skills.
- Ability to multi-task or shift priorities appropriately.
- Have a professional and accessible public-facing demeanor.
- Be willing to receive First-Aid/CPR training and if necessary safe food-handling and alcohol-service training.
- A minimum of 18 years old to pour and serve alcohol in New York State.
- The ability to maintain a safe work environment.
- The ability to work as part of a team.
- A basic knowledge of live theatre.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in and around the theater, box office, and lobby.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- The position requires a flexible schedule which includes nights, weekends, and holidays as necessitated by performances.
