General Job Description:
The Assistant Audience Services Manager works in at the direction of the Audience Services Manager to oversee all front-of-house operations during Syracuse Stage and S.U. Drama Department performances and events, creating a welcoming environment for patrons while ensuring safety, accessibility, and top-quality customer service. This is a hands-on role requiring excellent communication and problem-solving skills and requires night and weekend availability per performance schedule.
The description of the position in this document is representative and not exhaustive. Regular collaboration between shops in the production department and the wider organization is expected. Duties and responsibilities may shift with organizational needs.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Assist in management of Front-of-House and Concessions operations per above description and manage lobby activities to ensure timely curtain times
- Contribute to continued improvement in all aspects of customer service including friendliness, courtesy, accessibility, responsiveness, and ambiance, and contribute to the enhancement of business systems and processes.
- Assist in maintaining adequate inventory at all concession areas.
- Prepare and submit Syracuse Stage House Reports, daily deposits for concessions, Gift Shop sales reports, and other recordkeeping as required by the Business Office. File Accident Reports if necessary.
- Supervise S.U. Drama Interns when necessary to ensure that appropriate House reports are being submitted in a timely manner to the Business Office and proper procedures are followed.
- Communicate and collaborate as needed with the Audience Services Manager, and more broadly with Syracuse Stage and Syracuse University colleagues regarding regular upkeep, repairs, and improvements to the Archbold Theatre, Storch Theatre, Coyne Lobby, Sutton Pavilion, and any alternate venues. Help ensure these spaces remain accessible and compliant with campus and governmental regulations.
- Housekeeping of Archbold Theatre, Coyne Lobby, Sutton Pavilion, and any alternative venues outside grounds and restrooms just prior to performances during the week and throughout the weekend. Responsible for snow removal if it has occurred just prior to performance and during the weekend.
- Assist in planning and overseeing surround events, such as Opening Night Receptions, Happy Hours, and Trivia Nights, including concept, menu, ordering, setup, and supervising outside caterers to ensure proper set-up, clean up and compliance with food service policies for these receptions.
- Ensure building security after performances before leaving premises.
- With the Audience Services Manager, train and supervise all front-of-house staff for all venues, including alternative venues.
- Additional duties connected to front-of-house and support activities as assigned.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed in a typical office setting as well as in and around the theater, box office, and lobby.
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.
- The position requires a flexible schedule which includes some nights, weekends, and holidays as necessitated by performances as well as regular business hours.
Job Qualifications:
- Associate’s degree preferred.
- One or more years’ experience in a customer-service related position, preferably in an arts environment.
- Ability to remain calm and effective under pressure, especially during high-traffic periods or when resolving patron issues.
- Knowledge of Front-of-House operations, including ushering, concessions, audience management, and customer service principles and best practices, including accessibility standards and inclusive service practices.
- Successful completion of a background check is required to assume this position.
