Children’s Theatre Company (CTC), the nation’s largest and most acclaimed theatre for young people and multigenerational audiences seeks candidates to fill the role of Artistic Director.
POSITION AND RESPONSIBILITIES
CTC has a leadership model where the Artistic Director and Managing Director are co-equal organizational leaders, working together and reporting to the Board through its Chair. Artistic and production areas are direct reports to the Artistic Director.
Responsibilities
These are the primary roles and responsibilities of the Artistic Director:
- Forge a productive and deep partnership with the Managing Director through which they inspire others by their example of collaboration.
- Set a strategic artistic course for CTC that aligns with the organization’s mission, vision, and values and inspires audiences, donors, staff, and Board.
- Lead the season planning process including the selection of the plays and musicals, and creative teams.
- Oversee season productions and work with creative teams to ensure a positive working collaboration with the production and artistic staff.
- Develop ideas for commissioning, developing, and producing new plays and musicals; engage with writing teams to create work of artistic excellence.
- Develop relationships with other regional theatres and commercial producers to explore collaboration and opportunity for partnership.
- With the Managing Director, set and sustain a working culture that supports and inspires the best work of artists, artisans, and administrators.
- Hire, lead, and nurture the artistic and production team.
- Imbue and deepen CTC’s values of justice, equity, inclusion and diversity.
- Serve as a primary voice and ambassador of CTC, including key donor relationships.
- Ensure that CTC continues its leadership role locally and nationally.
- Work diligently with the Managing Director, senior staff, and Board to strengthen CTC’s fiscal sustainability.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ideally, the successful candidate for this role will possess:
- The skills and enthusiasm to forge a productive and collaborative relationship with the Managing Director and Board.
- A history of significant artistic achievement and a compelling creative vision.
- Significant background as a highly successful stage director, producer, playwright, or other artistic roles. Although the Committee has indicated a preference for candidates who are successful stage directors, this is not a prerequisite.
- A deep love and knowledge of theater, particularly for multi-generational audiences.
- Cultural competency and a demonstrable commitment to advancing the values of justice, equity, inclusion and diversity in an organization.
- Although previous top artistic director experience is not a prerequisite, prior artistic management roles in institutional environments will be a plus.
- A dynamic public presence that will inspire the Board, staff, and patrons to support the theatre’s artistic work and organizational vision.
- Demonstrated ability to fundraise and work with donors to excite them about the mission and particular projects. An appreciation for their generosity is vital.
- Strategic thinking relative to organizational vision and growth.
- Demonstrated ability to access a broad network of regional and commercial theater makers for collaboration and developmental work.

COMPENSATION AND START DATE
The annual salary range for the Artistic Director role at Children’s Theatre Company starts at $225,000 and includes a full benefit package commensurate with other organizations of its size. The company hopes to make its decision by the end of calendar year 2023 with the chosen candidate beginning full time on July 1, 2024. There will be the opportunity for some transition work with CTC’s departing Artistic Director, prior to the full-time start date.
