In 2019, TYA/USA partnered with Utah State University to launch a landmark research study on the state of the TYA field across the US. The recently published report provides an invaluable snapshot of our industry, gathered from surveys from 97% of our TYA/USA member theatres. Dr. Matt Omasta
Lead Researcher, TYA State of the Field Survey
Matt Omasta is Associate Professor and Associate Department Head of the Department of Theatre Arts at Utah State University. He serves as Director of Research & Scholarship for the American Alliance for Theatre & Education and as Chair of the Arts & Learning Special Interest Group for the American Educational Research Association. His publications include the books Playwriting and Young Audiences (with Nicole Adkins, Intellect), Play, Performance, and Identity (with Drew Chappell, Routledge) and Qualitative Research: Analyzing Life (with Johnny Saldaña, SAGE), and articles in Theatre Topics, Youth Theatre Journal, TYA Today, the International Journal of Education and the Arts, and Research in Drama Education: The Journal of Applied Theatre and Performance, among others. His work has been recognized by the American Alliance for Theatre & Education (The Johnny Saldaña Outstanding Professor of Theatre Education Award; The Lin Wright Special Recognition Award), the Educational Theatre Association (The Founders Award), and USU (Teacher of the Year; Undergraduate Faculty Mentor of the Year), among others.
